Reno Reno Reno!

Day 21 - Friday, April 18, 2008

We all made our way up to Reno (well Sparks actually) in Nevada to the Rotary District Conference at John Ascuaga's Nugget Casino.

The Nugget Casino. Our temporary home

It was completely different landscape again to what we have seen so far. Nevada is in a massive rain shadow caused by the Sierras, and it is really bid and hot and dry. Compared to CA, this is an ugly ugly place. Sorry to any Nevadans reading, but I wouldn't live here... and we didn't even visit in summer!

Nevada desert scenery... Quite a contrast to CA

We came over the Sierra Mountain Ranges into a valley which is basically a desert surrounded by Snow Capped Mountains. it looks so dry and barren here, except for the lines of houses in the cities. The drive over the Mountains (8000ft elevation) was gorgeous and we were able to see frozen lakes, completely snow covered mountains and fabulous veiws almost all the way to San Francisco.

Along the road from Sonora to Reno

It was a long road... Plenty of scenery!

As we arrived at the Casino, we socialised and got to know a lot of new faces at the Conference, and reunited with some familiar more familiar faces! What I still find interesting is when we are introudcing ourselves to people, there are a lot of people that believe that Tasmania is a Country. We met as a group for dinner in the Rose Ballroom and watched an interesting Melodrama produced by and starring Rotarians. It was well done and quite funny! At the end of the dinner, the Team all hit the tables. Some to play, and some to watch. Michelle was beaten at the Blackjack Table, but Will managed to keep a poker face long enough to win a few bucks! We had lots of fun "People Watching" at the dance floor with the live band, checking out the moves and the fashions. I'll just say Plastic Safety Goggles are fashionable in Reno and leave it at that!
